    Soul Generation; Enchantment;
    Ray, Goodman & Brown;
    Blue Magic and The Stylistics
    Constitution Hall, 11/28/2001

    INTRO:

    First, I must give mad props to ZieLove and Brotha Bradley. They have done a great job in the Nations capitol with quality events. Saturday night I was in "Soul Heaven"
    This was the final show of a series that had run through the year the promoter, a classy silver haired brotha with over 40 years of doing Classic Soul Shows and a wealth of history to share put together a KILLER show.
    Here is the line up, Soul Generation; Enchantment; Ray, Goodman & Brown; Blue Magic and The Stylistics. This was strictly for the fans and NO, I repeat NO media was invited. Backstage there were only two media outlets permitted ...... SP-er Mike Chase, from KISS-FM (who Emceed the show) and myself. This was the show that was a SP reunion. All of the groups had members who were on the list and knew of Soul Patrol.
    I was greeted by Blue Magic I was introduced to Cheryl Page's aunt Betty who is engaged to one of the vocalist. Mike Chase opened the show and intro SP's very own members SOUL GENERATION.

    SOUL GENERATION

    First off Constitution Hall is huge (Thank You Marion Anderson for opening this door to us) the house lights lowered, stage was almost dark and three figures emerged dressed in black with hints of rhinestones and the lights made it look like they had lit sparklers on their clothes. (Looking like a "Million Dollars") Their set was only 30 minutes but by the time they got to "Body and Soul," the audience was screaming. Mad props to you Cliff and the Soul Generation Family. I loved them as a teen and truly appreciated them even more right now. Their band was off the hook! At this point I grab ZieLove and make a mad dash backstage. I have decided that I am taking the photo's before the groups go on stage because they give up so much of themselves that when they get off stage, they are soaked, exhausted and I feel it is too rude of me to stop them from relaxing in their dressing room.

    ENCHANTMENT

    So, I grab ZieLove's home boys for a photo ..... "Enchantment." They are all so excited to see Zie and I find out 2 member and the drummer are Patrollers. Their band has already taken the stage (this promoter and his stage manager are the most professional) we hear a medley of Enchantment Hits that is whipping the audience. Zie and I ran back to the floor in time to see Enchantment take the stage. They wore ruby red suits white satin shirts and they looked sooooooo good.
    They tore into a fast opener with lots of choreography, brought the fans to their feet and then lead singer EJ, stepped forward and hushed the crowd by telling them how much Enchantment prayed for the safety of their fans during the tragic Sept. 11th attack. That they owed a lot to all of their fans but DC had always been special to them. At that point Enchantment broke into an accapella rendition of the National Anthem. This was so special and so very touching that the entire sold out house rose to their feet. This was truly emotional. I saw I wasn't the only person with tears running down my face. At the end of the song the audience cheered this was not a political statement, it was truly a humanitarian statement. Americans using song to heal their fellow Americans. This is a single they have cut and the proceeds go a victims fund. More info along with the song will appear on the SP website very shortly. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Enchantment or even how much music they had recorded. Their 30 minute set was far too short and when the first few bars of "Gloria" began to play the roar was so much that the band played the intro twice before it lowered enough to hear the group. Has Enchantment lost it's chops? HELL NO!!!! Did the lead singer have the juice to bring me to tears like he did on my vinyl ............
    Oh yes!

    THE MOMENTS (Ray, Goodman and Brown)

    Then reality set in and I was running to snap a photo of Moments .. Opps, I mean Ray, Goodman and Brown ...... NO, oh hell NO!!! I meant to say Moments . The one group I loved more than any other. The OFFICIAL Blue Lights In The Basement group. It was illegal in my community to have a house party without at least 7, yes I said 7 jams by THE MOMENTS and Ray, Goodman and Brown ARE The MOMENTS . Now for the record, as a founding member of the Ladies Drooler's Club of SP, The MOMENTS were inducted on the first ballot. And I must report to my sistah's that they are even finer that they were in 1970. The popped out of the dressing room for me and they had on the baddest black tux you'd ever seen! These brotha's are in great shape and they was "WEARIN" them suits! Black satin shawl collars and matching pleated scarves hung just so around their necks ..........
    Oh yes, I was drooling like a fool.
    Mad dash back to the floor in time to see Billy Brown glide to the mike and begin to wear the hell out of "Sunday" and then "Look At Me I'm In Love." All of a sudden all of these red lights began to glow in the audience. They we velvet roses with a tiny light bulb inside and it was beautiful. People had brought these roses in the lobby but I did not notice them until The Moments began to sing. Now I must give Larry Winfrey lots of love for stepping to plate and singing the parts of the late great Harry Ray. Larry didn't try to fake the funk by pretending to be Harry. He put his own brand on it and paid homage to Harry Ray. During "Not On the Outside" I tried to dial the List Czar and rub it in but by the time I got him on the phone they were singing "Love On A Two-way Street" and the Power Grinder took over the conversation ...... LOL. Ray,Goodman and Brown are already SPers and this is their second SP event (1st was in NJ) They have 2 new CD's that are being released in 2002. The first release, Jan 7th, is titled "A Moment With Friends" ..... this is the MUST have for all Classic Soul fans. Ray, Goodman and Brown salute their musical peers by covering The Chi-Lites, The Stylistics, The Manhattans and a few others. I have asked Marshall and the Stylistics what they thought of the project and all admitted it was a fantastic and flattering concept. And that they were all pleased with what they heard. While this CD was still being recorded I took the ListCzar to Billy Brown's house to hear some of it . Bob lost it and I was afraid he was going to take the master .... LOL.. So look forward to Ray, Goodman and Brown's CD listening party only on Soul Patrol. I am now lingering too long on the floor.

    The show has totally caught me in the spirit of the music.

    BLUE MAGIC

    I am too late to snap Blue Magic.
    It's not that I am too late it is I am in awe and blow my window of opportunity. The have on the infamous blue tuxes with the one sequined label and blue suede shoes. Must have put a "Spell" on my mind. This is the Blue Magic of my teen years. This is BlueMagic, the Blue Magic I loved from 1973 Soul Train on the show with the FourTops and Barbara Mason. And I am standing there star struck. There band began to play. I don't even bother heading to the floor I am firmly rooted to the floor in the wings. Their set is off the hook but some season "SideShow" just does it for me and that isn't even my Blue Magic song. It hits me this what I miss I don't a stage full of professional dancers I want the group, I want the choreography done by the group. I want the intimate atmosphere Classic Soul groups can provide even in a vast concert hall. I want the beautiful uniformed suits, fabulous shoes and I want the respect that Classic Soul Artist give there audiences. I am standing backstage jotting down notes,
